Ash Wednesday Services

There are two Ash Wednesday services at the Cathedral:

  • 12:10 pm
  • 7:00 pm

Bishop Chris Harper is presiding and Dean Scott Pittendrigh is preaching at both services.

This is a deeply moving and meaningful way to solemnly mark the Forty Day period of Lenten observance leading up to the events of Holy Week, our Lord’s Passion and the glorious Resurrection at Easter.  The service offers an opportunity to acknowledge our sorrow and brokenness as we pray together the Litany of Penitence and to reflect on the frailty and uncertainty of human life with the imposition of ashes on our foreheads as we are reminded:   “You are dust, and to you shall return.” The imposition of ashes is an ancient way to begin the Season of Lent. The ash is made from branches of palms from last year’s Liturgy of the Palms that have been collected and burned prior to the service.  The days of Lent are Days of Special Devotion and are observed by special acts of discipline and self-denial.  The service begins by the Celebrant offering an invitation to the whole community to observe the entire Lenten Season in this penitential way.  I offer that same invitation to all of you for this Season of Lent:

I invite you therefore, in the name of the Lord, to observe a holy Lent by self-examination, penitence, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and by reading and meditating on the word of God…

I hope you will join us for this and all our services in this Holy Season.

– Dean Scott Pittendrigh
